AS HAGIOGRAFIAS SEISCENTISTAS DE JOSÉ DE ANCHIETA: PROJETOS POLÍTICOS E IDENTIDADES RELIGIOSAS EM CONCORRÊNCIA
Entre 1605 e 1609, o padre jesuíta
Pero Rodrigues elaborou a obra biográfica
de caráter hagiográfico “Vida do Padre Jose
de Anchieta da Companhia de Jesu”, sobre o
confrade recentemente morto. Alguns anos
depois, em 1617, era impressa nas cidades
de Lyon e de Colônia, no Sacro Império
Romano-Germânico, a “Josephi Anchietae
Societatis Jesu Sacerdotis in Brasilia defuncti
Vita”, biografia escrita pelo jesuíta Sebastião
Beretário explicitamente baseada no texto de
Rodrigues. Nos anos seguintes, até 1640, ano
do primeiro centenário da ordem, mais de uma
dezena de publicações de caráter biográfico,
individuais e coletivas, impressas em diferentes
línguas e locais da Europa, traziam Anchieta
como protagonista. A proposta deste trabalho
é refletir sobre as apropriações do discurso
hagiográfico sobre José de Anchieta produzido
na América Portuguesa em princípios do século
XVII em biografias preparadas por jesuítas e
impressas na Europa nas primeiras décadas do
Seiscentos.
A partir disto se elencam dois objetivos para o
presente trabalho: comparar as representações
de Anchieta como arquétipo do jesuíta ideal
presentes na biografia elaborada na América no
início do Seiscentos e nos discursos posteriores
circulantes pela Europa; e relacionar tais
representações a diferentes processos de
construção e divulgação de uma identidade
coletiva jesuítica pela Companhia de Jesus,
considerando as dimensões política e cultural
destes mesmos processos.

Abstract:
Between 1605 and 1609,
Jesuit Father Pero Rodrigues elaborated the
hagiographical text “Life of Father Jose de
Anchieta of the Society of Jesus”, about the
recently dead confrere. A few years later, in
1617, the “Josephi Anchietae Societatis Jesu
Sacerdotis in Brasilia defuncti Vita”, a biography
written by the jesuit Sebastião Beretário,
explicitly based on Rodrigues’ text, was printed twice in the cities of Lyon and Cologne,
in the Holy Roman Empire. In the following years, until 1640, when the Society
celebrated her first centenary, more than a dozen individual and collective biographical
publications, printed in different languages and places in Europe, brought Anchieta as
a protagonist. The purpose of this paper is to consider about the appropriations made
by european jesuits of the hagiographic discourse produced in Portuguese America in
the early seventeenth century about José de Anchieta.
Therefore, two objectives are listed for the present work: to compare the
Anchieta’s representations as an archetype of the ideal Jesuit present in the
biography elaborated in America at the beginning of the seventeenth century and in
the subsequent discourses circulating in Europe; and to relate these representations
to different processes of construction and dissemination of a Jesuit collective identity
by the Society of Jesus, considering the political and cultural dimensions of these
same processes.
