Abstract: Glioma is a highly malignant tumor that originates from the glial cells of the nervous system. Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common malignant brain tumor in adults. However, this disease is extremely challenging to treat because the tumor is detected late, and the infiltrating cells remain inactive near the blood-brain barrier. Unfortunately, the prognosis has not significantly improved in recent years. Though diagnostic strategies and new therapies are available, they are very invasive and may only add a few months to a patient's life. Therefore, developing pre-clinical study models that simulate the tumor microenvironment is crucial. This approach enables the development of new treatment strategies. In this review, we present information about the disease, the most common study models currently used, and the existing challenges.
