Abstract: Public educational policies aimed at rural people lack two fundamental logics: universalization, that is, everyone's access to school; and specificity, which refers to respect and appreciation of peasant reality and culture. The Mediation for Transformation Project, considering these logics, is an extension action of the Degree Course in Rural Education at the Federal University of Piauí – UFPI, Teresina Campus, which aims to implement educational policies and practices in rural schools with a view to overcoming of the challenges of basic education in partner municipalities. Considering the above, the objective of this study was to analyze the contributions of the Mediation for Transformation Extension Project to the organization of Rural Education policy in the municipality of Piripiri (PI). Field research with a qualitative approach was developed and a questionnaire was used as a data production device, which was answered by seven professionals who work in the Municipal Department of Education of that municipality. The results indicate that the aforementioned project enabled the expansion of knowledge about rural educational policies, as well as provoked reflections on the main problems that characterize school education developed in schools located in rural areas. It is concluded that, despite the contributions, a long way needs to be covered so that the municipality has a planned, coordinated and systemic Rural Education policy, with integrated actions and directed by common objectives, with the potential to solve the problems experienced by the rural students.
