Abstract: The chapter addresses the importance of understanding the characteristics of collaborative and mobile learning, especially in an educational context. It highlights the role of the teacher as a mediator and the interaction among students in the use of mobile devices to promote learning through collective activities. Furthermore, it emphasizes how Vygotsky's theory can be applied to comprehend how teachers, students, and mobile devices act as mediators in the teaching and learning process, both inside and outside the school. Collaborative learning is defined as a practice in which individuals mutually assist each other, without hierarchy, to achieve common goals in various contexts, including education. This approach is rooted in the philosophy of the New School, which values active student participation and underscores group work as a means of educational development. John Dewey, one of the influential educators in this movement, advocated for a school that functioned as a democratic community, where students learned through projects and group interactions. Collaborative learning gained more prominence in the 1990s, inspired by Vygotsky's Sociocultural Theory. This theory underscores social interaction as fundamental for human development, where psychological functions are shaped by relationships with the environment and other individuals. Lastly, the chapter explores the historical and theoretical roots of collaborative learning, highlighting its connection to Vygotsky's theory and its application in promoting interaction between students and mobile devices for meaningful learning.
