ARTROPATIA CRÔNICA EM CONSEQUÊNCIA DA FEBRE CHIKUNGUNYA

• Abstract:

  Introduction: Chikungunya is an acute febrile illness associated with

  intense pain and frequent debilitating polyarthralgia. It is caused by a Chikungunya

  alphavirus, belonging to the Togaviridae family, transmitted through the bite of the

  female infected with the mosquito Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. Objective: to

  characterize joint involvement as a consequence of chikungunya fever. Method: this

  is an integrative research carried out in the databases SciELO, LILACS and MEDLINE

  through the descriptors arthralgia, arthritis and Chikungunya Fever. The search resulted

  in 39 studies, which after a thorough analysis were excluded those that did not meet

  the inclusion criteria, 4 studies were added composing the final sample. Results: In

  chikungunya, the most common symptoms are sudden onset fever and arthralgia and /

  or arthritis (practically in 100% of cases), usually of symmetric and polyarticular pattern.

  Joint complaints affect, especially hands, wrists, ankles and feet, most of the time are

  disabling. Chikungunya fever presents a high incidence of recurrence and chronicity of

  joint involvement with persistence of inflammatory symptoms. Conclusion: After the

  initial manifestations, the rate of recurrence of arthritis decreases over time, from 88%

  to 100% in the first six weeks, reaching 12% up to five years. Some authors defend the

  need for rheumatologic follow-up of patients with chronic arthralgia, identifying cases

  that may manifest in the long term as secondary rheumatoid arthritis.
