Abstract: Sickle cell anemia is a hereditary hematological disease and a public health problem in Brazil and around the world, given its high morbidity and mortality and clinical manifestations. It is estimated that there are more than two million carriers of the HbS gene in the country, with around 3000 children diagnosed annually, corresponding to an incidence of 1 in every 1000 live births. This study aims to present relevant data on the early diagnosis of sickle cell anemia in newborns in public health, investigating diagnostic methods, analyzing the consequences of late diagnosis and evaluating the effectiveness of neonatal screening programs. The methodology adopted is a narrative literature review, using databases such as PubMed, SciELO, LILACS and Google Scholar and site federal government of brazil. Focusing on articles published between 2019 and 2024. The results indicate that neonatal screening, especially through the heel prick test, It is crucial for early diagnosis, preventing serious complications and improving patients' quality of life. Studies show that methods such as hemoglobin electrophoresis and high-performance liquid chromatography are effective in detecting hemoglobinopathies. Early diagnosis allows for timely therapeutic interventions, reducing morbidity and mortality associated with the disease. It is concluded that the implementation and improvement of neonatal screening programs, such as the PNTN, and comprehensive care policies, such as the PNAIPDF, are fundamental for public health, highlighting the need for effective public policies, family and financial support, and training continuous monitoring by health professionals to ensure adequate assistance, are essential to improve the health of people with Sickle Cell Anemia.
