APRECIAÇÃO DO ENSINO DE GENÉTICA NO CURSO DE MEDICINA DE UMA UNIVERSIDADE PÚBLICA DA PARAÍBA
A Genética apresenta grande importância e relevância na prática médica, sendo, portanto, imprescindível o questionamento acadêmico sobre essa temática. Assim, os objetivos do presente estudo foram analisar a percepção dos alunos
do curso de Medicina de uma universidade pública da Paraíba sobre o conteúdo de Genética ministrado durante o curso e comparar as respostas dadas pelos estudantes dos períodos iniciais com as respostas dos alunos internos. Estudo descritivo, transversal, quantitativo, realizado no Centro de Ciências Médicas da Universidade Federal da Paraíba, Campus I, João Pessoa. Os participantes do estudo foram alunos do primeiro, oitavo, décimo e décimo segundo períodos do Curso de Medicina. O questionário semiestruturado continha questões fechadas referentes ao conhecimento de Genética Básica e Genética Médica e sua importância para a formação do médico generalista. Os dados obtidos foram analisados por meio do teste Qui-quadrado. A qualificação do conhecimento acadêmico sobre genética foi considerada boa para a maioria dos tópicos analisados, com diferença estatisticamente significativa apenas para as questões oncogenética (c2; p= 0,005), genética e doenças comuns do adulto (c2; p= 0,004) e tratamento de doenças genéticas (c2; p= 0,028). Quanto à adequação do conhecimento em genética para a prática clínica, cerca de 50% dos acadêmicos consideraram seu conhecimento suficiente e apenas 30% se declararam confiantes para orientação genética. Em suma, os participantes demonstraram um bom conhecimento de genética médica e/ou humana, embora não tivessem experiência prática no assunto. Este estudo reforça a necessidade de reformulação no currículo, com ênfase na aplicabilidade clínica do conhecimento científico.

Abstract:
Genetics has great importance and relevance in medical practice. Therefore, the academic question about this subject is essential. This study aimed to identify, through a self-reported questionnaire, how Medicine Course students evaluated the teaching of Human and Medical Genetics for the medical practice and to compare the responses of students of the initial course periods with those of intern students. Descriptive, cross-sectional, quantitative study, performed in the Medical Sciences Centre, Federal University of Paraíba. Study participants were students of the first, eighth, tenth and twelfth periods of the Medicine Course. The semi-structured questionnaire contained closed questions regarding knowledge of Basic Genetics and Medical Genetics and the importance of Genetics knowledge for the formation of general physicians. The data obtained were analyzed using Chi-squared Test. The qualification of academic knowledge about genetics was considered good for most of the topics analyzed, with significant statistical difference only for the oncogenetic (c2; p= 0.005), genetic and common adult diseases (c2; p= 0.004) and treatment of genetic diseases (c2; p= 0.028). Concerning the adequacy of knowledge in genetics for clinical practice, approximately 50% of the students considered their knowledge sufficient and 30% consider themselves confident to give genetic counseling. In short, the participants demonstrated good knowledge of medical and/or human genetics, although they had no practical experience in the subject. This study reinforces the importance of reformulation in the curriculum, with emphasis on the clinical applicability of scientific knowledge.
