Abstract:
In the present study, Pereskia aculeata Mill. leaves were used to produce a biosorbent
(OPN) to remove Cd(II) and Pb(II) from aqueous solutions. OPN was produced through a
very simple and green process, and without chemical modification. OPN was characterized
by FTIR spectroscopy, elemental C, H, and N analysis, scanning electron microscopy,
determination of pH of point of zero charge, and the number of acid functions. Batch
studies of the adsorption of Cd(II) and Pb(II) as a function of solution pH were performed
in single and binary aqueous solutions. The optimum pH for the adsorption of both ions on
OPN was 5.0 with adsorption capacities of 95 mg g -1 for Pb(II) and 27 mg g -1 for Cd(II).
The reuse of OPN was evaluated and showed that 0.10 mol L -1 HNO 3 solution promotes
almost complete desorption of both cations.
