Abstract: In this work, the better conditions on treatment of the organic dye Vermelho Laca Manganês (VLM) by Advanced Oxidation Process (AOPs) were investigated. The dye was solubilized in alkaline solution (VLMpH). Tests with different conditions of UVA radiation, and varying the concentrations of H2O2, K2S2O8 (KPS) and ZnO were made individually to evaluate the optimal concentration of each reagent, seeking a maximum degradation of dye in 60 minutes. For the tests with VLMpH and UVA, the results indicated that the optimal concentrations for H2O2, KPS and ZnO were respectively 15,0; 11,0 and 2,0 mmol L-1. The UVA/O2/ZnO and UVA/O2/ZnO/KPS systems presented very similar degradation rates (97 and 96%) and higher than the UVA/O2/ZnO/H2O2 system (91%) for the 491 nm band. Regarding the 314 nm band, it can be observed that the heterogeneous process using the UVA/O2/ZnO/KPS system reached a high degradation rate in 30 minutes and after 60 min the UVA/O2/ZnO system presented degradation rates (81%) similar to UVA/O2/ZnO/KPS (83%). The UVA/O2/ZnO/H2O2 system presented degradation rates lower than the system without H2O2 (65%). In general, the study shows that AOPs are effective by the treatment of solutions containing organic dyes.
