Abstract: Soils with low anthropogenic influence or under natural vegetation present a wide variation of their chemical and physical attributes. The objective of this study was to evaluate the spatial variability of the attributes of the soil, through geostatistics, in soils with low anthropogenic influence, located in the mountainous region of the state of Rio de Janeiro. Sixty-two soil samples were taken to determine: pH; CTC; V%; Corg; P, K+; Ca+2; Mg+2; Na+; Al3+; H+Al; sand; silt; and clay. The data were subjected to the analyses of: descriptive statistics; geostatistics and interpolation by kriging. The chemical attributes of the soil varied spatially, where they presented low to high variability for the study area. Based on the maps of spatial distribution of the attributes; CV analyses; correlation; and principal component analysis, the low natural fertility of these soils was evidenced. The results obtained showed that, in at least 70% of their spatial variability, the levels were between very low and medium. Three sources of influence on the spatial distribution of natural fertility were highlighted: one characterized by land use and occupation (forest and extensive pasture); the relief; and another associated with the source material, these being the main sources of natural fertility variability.
