Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To describe the relationship of anxiety as a preponderant factor for TMD Advent and to reinforce the importance of psychological follow-up in the care of these patients. METHODS: The present study is a literature review with a qualitative approach and descriptive character. RESULTS: 15 articles were found, however, only 5 fit the research objective that emphasized a positive correlation between anxiety and the development of temporomandibular disorders. CONCLUSION: It was possible to perceive that, even though TMD is a dental pathology, it is related to psychological aspects such as anxiety. And it was also identified that performing psychotherapy in patients with TMD helps to reduce the intensity of pain reported by patients. Therefore, it is necessary for the dentist to know the psychological elements of anxiety related to TMD so that the evaluation and treatment are carried out in a more assertive and efficient way.
