Abstract: Objective: Determine the relationship between the position of the impacted lower third molars and the proximity to the mandibular canal in orthopantomograms at the Imaxcenter Oral Radiology Center, Juliaca 2022. Material and methods: non-experimental, relational, retrospective, transversal, observational study; quantitative method. The sample was 180 orthopantomograms of patients with impacted lower third molars. The measuring instruments were the Winter Classification and the Ezoddini classification. Results: Regarding the position of piece 3.8, 10.44% had a vertical position, 53.30% had a mesioangular position, 0.55% had a distoangular position, and 35.71% had a horizontal position. Regarding the proximity of piece 3.8 to the mandibular canal; 18.68% did not contact the canal, 69.78% with canal contact but without structural changes, 4.40% with roots projected into the mandibular canal, 2.75% with roots in the mandibular canal, 4.40% with flexed roots and deviation of the mandibular canal. Regarding the position of piece 4.8, 11.54% had a vertical position, 46.70% had a mesioangular position, 1.10% had a distoangular position, and 40.66% had a horizontal position. Regarding the proximity of piece 4.8 to the mandibular canal; 14.29% had no contact with the canal, 73.08% had contact with the canal but without structural changes, 5.49% had roots projected into the mandibular canal, 4.40% had roots in the mandibular canal, and 2.75% had roots flexed and deviation of the mandibular canal. Using Pearson's chi-square test, a p value = 0.2283 was found in part 3.8 and a p value = 0.4208 for part 4.8. Conclusion: there is no significant relationship between the position of the impacted lower third molars and the proximity to the mandibular canal.
