Abstract: The arithmetic mean is one of the fundamental concepts in statistics and mathematics education; however, its teaching is often reduced to a procedural perspective focused on calculation. This chapter presents a historical–epistemological analysis of the arithmetic mean in order to understand its conceptual evolution, its consolidation within statistical knowledge, and its implications for teaching. Through a bibliographic review of historical and educational sources, the contributions of ancient civilizations and mathematicians to the development of the concept are examined, from its early applications related to data recording, astronomy, and games of chance to its formalization within probability theory and statistics. Additionally, the arithmetic mean is addressed as an epistemological construction that enables the representation, synthesis, and interpretation of data sets beyond an algorithmic understanding. Finally, the chapter discusses didactic implications for school teaching, emphasizing the need to promote conceptual understanding aimed at statistical literacy and the development of critical thinking.
