Abstract: Physical fitness is an indicator of physical performance and health status of any person, where one of its central components concerns aerobic capacity. Currently there are several direct and indirect methods to evaluate aerobic capacity, where the direct or also called laboratory methods determine results, while the indirect or also called field methods estimate results. However, in the Ecuadorian sports context, the terms 'determine' and 'estimate' are often interpreted in practice as synonyms. Therefore, the present study focuses its general objective on carrying out a critical analysis that contrasts bibliographically field and laboratory tests in allusion to CA. Thus, the methodology concerns a qualitative grounded theory design, using three principles of the social sciences: theoretical lending, reflective thinking and metaphorical thinking, along with the analytical-synthetic theoretical method. Indeed, no evaluation method is 'bad' or 'good' in isolation, as long as it is applied as a procedure to be applied at a given time, phase or stage in a cohesive manner according to the purposes to be pursued and the population to be intervened.
