Abstract: This paper investigates the influence of some socioeconomic characteristics on homicide rates in the municipalities of the state of Rio Grande do Norte. For that, the method of counterfactual inferences was adopted on a set of information referring to the period from 2010 to 2015. The main results inform that the education of the individual controls the level of violence until the average distribution of violence. Specifically, educational attainment decreases homicide rates by 0.12 in the 10% of less violent counties in this regard. Additionally, there is a considerable positive effect of the young population on the increase of violence rates in the municipalities of Potiguares. That is, victims aged 15-29 drive on average homicide rates by 0.13.
