Abstract: This study evaluated the parasitic contamination of vegetables sold in street markets and supermarkets in the city of Dourados, Mato Grosso do Sul. 25 vegetables were analyzed, of witch 14 were samples of lettuce (Lactuca sativa), 8 were arugula (Eruca sativa) and 3 were kale (Brassica oleracea). 12 out of 25 were collected from street markets and 13 from supermarkets. The vegetables were washed with manual agitation in 1% Tween 80 solution and subjected to two types of analysis methods, Faust and Lutz. After each method, the slides were examined under optical microscopy. Contamination by parasites was found in 52% of the samples, with the presence of protozoan being more frequent than helminths. Polyparasitism was present in 64% of the samples. Among the pathogenic parasites, Giardia spp., and Taenia spp. eggs were most frequently found. The high contamination rates of the specimens demonstrate the vulnerability surrounding the sanitary conditions of the production, transportation and marketing of these vegetables.
