Abstract: The Bacanga River watershed, located in São Luís – MA, faces serious environmental and sanitary issues due to unplanned urbanization and the lack of adequate basic sanitation infrastructure. In this context, the present study aims to assess the microbiological and physicochemical quality of the effluents from São Geraldo Street, located in the Sá Viana neighborhood, by analyzing physicochemical parameters such as pH and turbidity, and microbiological indicators such as total coliforms and Escherichia coli. The methodology was based on sample collection at five distinct points along the street, followed by laboratory analysis and comparison of the results to the limits established by CONAMA Resolution No. 357/2005. The data obtained revealed significant microbiological contamination at all sampling points, with particular emphasis on the presence of E. coli, confirming recent fecal pollution and a risk to public health. Additionally, the sewage system was found to be precarious, with rudimentary septic tanks and sewage being discharged directly into water bodies. The interdisciplinary approach enabled the integration of environmental, social, and sanitary aspects, reinforcing the urgency of public policies and structural interventions aimed at promoting health and protecting the local environment.
