Abstract: Sandy soils, due to their fragility and low water and nutrient retention capacity, represent a challenge for agriculture. Biochar appears as a promising alternative due to its physicochemical and biological properties. In addition, its application can enhance the quality of poor soils, favoring healthy plant growth and agricultural productivity. Therefore, the objective of this study was to verify the levels of chlorophyll a and b in the development of rice plants (Oryza sativa L.) from different commercial biochars grown in Planossolo Haplico. Different biochars produced in charcoal plants in the state of Rio de Janeiro were used, applied in four doses (0, 10, 20 and 30 tons ha-1). The chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b contents were determined with a chlorophyll meter. The results showed that biochar has the potential to increase the capacity of rice plants to absorb light and perform photosynthesis in sandy soils. The biochars showed an increase in chlorophyll a and b levels at 26 DAS. Furthermore, in the BC3 and BC4 treatments, a significant increase in chlorophyll b levels was observed at 32 days after sowing (DAS), evidencing the beneficial effects of biochar in the long term. Thus, it was found that the different biochars have similar structural characteristics, which contribute effectively to the production of photosynthetic pigments, favoring agricultural productivity in fragile soils.
