Abstract: Reading allows students to access different perspectives and experiences in the teaching-learning process. The textbook is a fundamental tool in this process as it is one of the main instruments used by the teacher to mediate these reading practices. From this perspective, the objective of this study was to analyze the texts present in Portuguese language textbooks for the 1st to 5th year of Elementary School (I) in the municipal education network in a city in the interior of the state of São Paulo (SP). An analysis of the teaching material available in PDF format was carried out, in the sequence of books according to school years and classified according to textual type and genre. Then, a comparison was made of the number of narrative and expository texts and the classification according to textual genre, all organized in a spreadsheet. The data were statistically analyzed and compared with the Friedman test between the school years from the 1st to the 5th year. The result showed a significant difference between the texts, with a greater number of narrative-type texts in relation to the number of expository-type texts and a predominance of narrative-type texts. Reading different textual genres is fundamental for students to interpret and produce texts suitable for different communicative situations and the frequent presence of expository type texts in everyday life, such as news and informative texts, indicates the need to develop competence in this gender since the early grades.
