Abstract: In the past, cemeteries were set up in areas outside the municipality's housing nucleus. Currently, this practice doesn’t happen regularly, either because the urban occupation arrived around the cemetery, or because the urban occupation gave way to the implantation of the cemetery in that cluster. This entire situation of environmental non- compliance was observed in the study area, standing out burial types inhumations or the use of graves, without waterproofing the soil, inexistence of local geological and hydrogeological studies, and the existence of cistern-type underground water wells in several residences around the cemetery. In this context, the general objective of this work was to evaluate the possible physical-chemical and microbiological contamination of the soil and water through the collection of samples located inside and outside the cemetery of Ritápolis - MG, surveying the potential damages to the physical means and consequent risks to the human health because of the form of burial. To achieve the objective, a bibliographic review and field activities were carried out, including on-site recognition with photographic record, groundwater and soil collections. The main microbiological and physical chemical parameters were analyzed in the Engequisa laboratory, the test methods used to determine the results of the samples were Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater, 23nd. Edition, 2017 (SM) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The study presents an analysis of the legislation for possible contamination of the water and soil collected. Thus, the irregularities found, although within the limits of resolutions and ordinances, indicate a possible influence of the cemetery in altering the composition of groundwater and soil.
