Abstract: Cervical cytology is a highly sensitive test performed on women who are sexually active to prevent cervical cancer. The study carried out aims to highlight the importance of this screening test but also demonstrate its high specificity, which allows the diagnosis and treatment of patients with squamous cell atypia. To this end, a survey was carried out over the last 5 years on cervical cytology tests carried out in the city of Bauru-SP, through the DATASUS platform. The data revealed that of 412 exams that demonstrated squamous cell atypia through the Pap test, 68.20% represented HPV and CIN I lesions, 26.94% showed CIN II and CIN III and 4.84% were related to HPV lesions. high grade, but cannot exclude micro-invasion and invasive squamous cell carcinoma. Therefore, the importance of performing cervical cytology is evident, not only for screening, but also for diagnosing pre-neoplastic lesions and neoplasms.
