Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the potential use of commercial biochars as a sustainable alternative for growing rice plants in sandy soil. Four commercial biochars (BC1, BC2, BC3, and BC4) were studied at three doses (10, 20, and 30 tons ha-1). Growth was determined through 5 measurements, at 12, 17, 22, 27, and 32 days after sowing (DAS). The results showed that the application of biochars did not promote greater growth when compared to rice grown in untreated soil. However, among the treatments, biochar BC4 showed greater potential to benefit rice growth than the other treatments, especially at 22 DAS. Therefore, biochar may not have beneficial effects on rice plant growth in the short term, such as 32 days in this study, but its benefits such as improving soil structure and carbon input should be considered, and long-term studies are necessary.
