Abstract: The progress and improvement in cutting tools designed for manufacturing processes are becoming increasingly demanding, especially in state-of-the-art machining equipment that prioritizes efficiency. The careful selection of parameters and appropriate cutting inserts is not only a necessity but also a constant pursuit to keep up with technological advancements, aiming for cost reduction and higher product quality. This study analyzed the wear of coated carbide inserts in the turning process of SAE1020 and SAE1045 steels on a CNC lathe. The steels underwent machining processes, with cutting speeds ranging from 200 to 300 m/min, a feed rate of 0.36 mm, and a cutting depth of 3.5 mm. The evaluation and identification of insert wear were performed through analysis using a magnifying glass-type microscope. It was observed that when using these machining conditions, there was a predominance of flank wear and abrasive wear on the exit surface, as well as the presence of a built-up edge during the machining of SAE 1020 steel. Overall, the titanium nitride coating showed slight superiority over aluminum oxide.
