Abstract: In industrial casting and ingot operations, the choice of mold material and solidification conditions play a crucial role in defining the microstructure and, consequently, the mechanical properties and quality of the final product. This study aimed to investigate the influence of mold material (sand and steel) on structural parameters during the solidification of austenitic stainless steel AISI 304. To this end, stainless steel plates were solidified in sand molds and water-cooled steel molds, with continuous monitoring of temperature variations in the metal and mold using thermocouples connected to a data acquisition system. The obtained cooling curves allowed for the analysis of cooling rates under each condition. Metallographic analysis revealed that the mold material significantly influences the formation of macro and microstructures during the solidification process, particularly the reduction in secondary dendritic arm spacing in steel molds due to higher heat extraction rates. The results demonstrated that plates solidified in steel molds exhibited greater unidirectionality of columnar grains and a more defined centerline compared to those obtained in sand molds. This study contributes to the understanding of the effects of mold material on the microstructure of austenitic stainless steels, providing valuable insights for optimizing industrial casting processes.
