Abstract: Introduction: Infant mortality (MI) is an important indicator of health and living conditions of a population, and its reduction is still a challenge for health services and society as a whole. The justification for this article adresses the necessity to a better understanding of the epidemiological data about the MI, and from the analysis of these data, to contribute to a better characterization of this reality and to the development of strategies that aim to reduce this mortality rate. Objectives: The objective was to make a comparison between TMI and causes of mortality in the state of Tocantins, northern region and country from 2016 to 2020. Methodology This is an ecological study characterized by the observation, exploration and analysis of a delimited geographic area and a defined group of individuals. The TMI estimates presented in this article were obtained from data from the Mortality Information System (SIM) and Live Births Information System (SINASC) from 2016 to 2020, in the State of Tocantins, North Region and Brazil. Results and Discussion: In 2020, Brazil had a lower infant mortality rate, 11.52 deaths per 1000 live births, noticing a decrease over the historical series analyzed. In the northern region, the lowest rate was 14.54 deaths per 1000 live births also in 2020. In Tocantins, this drop was also noticeable, with a rate of 10.62 deaths per 1000 live births at the end of the analyzed series. The causes of infant death were also investigated, the two main causes in Tocantins, North Region and Brazil were, first, deaths due to some conditions originating in the perinatal period and second, deaths due to congenital malformations, deformities and chromosomal anomalies, in the State of Tocantins the third cause of infant death is infectious and parasitic diseases, and in the North Region and Brazil, the third main cause presented were respiratory system diseases. Final Considerations: The analysis and discussion of the data from this study help to characterize a reality and create subsidies for the implementation of health actions according to the needs of the population, enabling the obtainment of positive results in the long term.
