Abstract: This work aims to present the theoretical framework of five performance evaluation models, widely disseminated by organizations and in the literature in the area of administration, which are the balanced scorecard (Kaplan & Norton), quantum performance (Hronec), the seven criteria performance (Sink & Tuttle), routine management (Falconi Campos) and Juran's control pyramid (Juran). All of these models are generic and can be applicable to any type of organizational system, regardless of size and nature, and are therefore capable of application in rail transport systems. Research was carried out to identify whether there is application of any of these models presented in the theoretical framework in rail transport systems, identifying the Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitano (CPTM), the Hong Kong metro railway system (KCRC) and a group of been benchmarking of subways (Community of Metros - CoMET) as some examples of application of the balanced scorecard model. Although there are several models to evaluate an organization's performance, all models seek a way of controlling and monitoring results through the use of performance indicators. However, a careful analysis is necessary to objectively define what an organization needs to measure. As a result, it can, in effect, be concluded that generic performance assessment models can perfectly be applied to rail transport systems.
