Abstract: Introduction: Breastfeeding (BF) is an important factor in promoting health as it involves techniques for protection, bonding, affection, and nutrition for the child. The literature reports numerous benefits for the newborn, mother, and family, emphasizing its importance in reducing morbidity and mortality. In recent years, governments and healthcare professionals have made efforts to expand access to information and develop public policies to ensure BF. However, social, economic, and even biological factors have been identified as facilitators for early weaning. The objective of this study is to analyze hospitalizations due to breastfeeding difficulties at a hospital and maternity unit in Goiás. Methodology: This is a cross-sectional, retrospective, descriptive, and quantitative study, analyzing secondary data on hospitalizations at the Hospital da Mulher and Maternidade Dona Iris over the past 3 years. The ICD-10 codes used for data collection were P92.5, and the project was approved by the research ethics committee under opinion number: 6,455,581. Results: Among the 117 cases found, 45.3% (n=53) were male neonates, 34.2% (n=40) were female neonates, and 20.5% (n=24) did not have their gender reported. Regarding race, 93.2% (n=109) of the cases were of mixed race, while 6.8% (n=8) were white. Considering the municipality of residence, over half of the sample (50.4% / n=59) lived in the capital, Goiânia, 37.6% (n=44) in cities in the metropolitan region of Goiânia, and 12% (n=14) in different cities in the interior of Goiás. Conclusion: The study found a significant reduction in breastfeeding difficulties at a hospital in Goiás, yet the literature indicates that breastfeeding remains a challenge. Despite progress, it is essential to continue promoting, protecting, and supporting breastfeeding to ensure women's success.
