• Abstract:

  In 2016, the world production of

  sweet potatoes (Ipomoea batatas L. Lam.) was

  over 105 million tons. From overall, 74.7% had

  been producing by the Asian continent, which

  also holds the largest consuming portion of this

  tuber. The growing demand for sweet potatoes

  has boosted the agricultural production of this

  food in Brazil, producing more than 669 thousand tons. This positive outlook for the

  sector’s growth induces the exploration of patents involved in the use and processing

  of sweet potatoes from the perspective of the development of new food products using

  this cultivar. Therefore, this work had the purpose of searching for patent documents

  related to sweet potatoes and its application in conjunction with articles published with

  the same theme. The patent search was carried out with information available on the

  specialized platform ESPACENET using the keywords ‘sweet’ plus the boolean operator

  ‘and’ with ‘potato’, ‘Ipomoea batatas’, ‘sweet potato’ and CPC codes A23L19/00,

  A23L19/10 and A23L19/12, and the survey of articles was done on the ScienceDirect®

  platform. A total of 122 patent documents and 696 articles were identified and evaluated,

  both related to the keyword ‘sweet potato.’ It was possible to verify that the research

  and technological application of sweet potatoes is a promising field for new studies,

  enabling the publication of new articles as well as new patent deposits.
