Abstract: The study aims to investigate the routes of delivery in the municipality of Bragança-Pará in the period from 2016 to 2020, by identifying the sociodemographic and obstetric profile associated with each route of delivery and analyzing the temporal distribution of the proportions of normal birth and cesarean section in the municipality in five years. This is an ecological, descriptive study, with quantitative approach, with analysis of retrospective data from the municipality of Bragança, Pará state, in five years. The data were extracted from the Live Births Information System (SINASC), in which descriptive statistics and the calculation of proportion of vaginal deliveries and proportion of cesarean deliveries were performed. A total of 10,584 births were recorded in the study municipality, 56.67% of which were vaginal deliveries and 43.33% cesarean deliveries. The highest percentage of both routes of delivery occurred in women aged 20 to 24 years (31.10%), with education from 8 to 11 years (59.57%), single (58.28%), brown (98.82%), single fetus (98.72%), and gestational age between 37 and 41 weeks (65.21%). As for the number of prenatal visits, 4 to 6 visits predominated in normal delivery (36.43%). In cesarean sections, the highest percentage of women had 7 or more prenatal visits (44.10%). There was a difference in the profile of vaginal and cesarean deliveries only regarding the number of consultations. The highest proportion of vaginal deliveries in the years studied was in 2016 with 61.38%, with Bragança obtaining the highest proportion in relation to the values of the state of Pará, North Region, and Brazil. The highest proportion of cesarean deliveries in the municipality occurred in 2020, with 47.37%. In that same year there was an increase in the proportion of cesarean sections at the national level, reaching 58.19% in Brazil. This result reinforces that even with global and national efforts to change this scenario, this present study showed that there is an epidemic of cesarean sections, which is quite worrying and signals the need for planning strategies, implementation and enforcement of public policies directed to the maternal public.
