Abstract: CO2 emissions from subways can be estimated and analyzed using different approaches, depending on the aspects to be considered. The approach to emissions caused by the consumption of train traction energy, that is, the electricity that moves the trains, makes it possible to compare the results of emissions with other means of transport, caused by the fuel used. The emission of traction energy from metro trains, estimated per passenger-km, presents fluctuating results around the world, depending on the energy matrix used in each location and passenger demand. This work aims to analyze, in different subways around the world, the CO2 emission from the traction energy of trains, comparing the results obtained with other subways and other means of transport. The Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo subways presented the best CO2 emission results among all the subways, buses and cars surveyed.
