Abstract: To analyze the characteristics of asthma. Literature review: Asthma is the most common chronic respiratory disease and can be defined as a condition caused by episodic and reversible bronchoconstrictions, secondary to airway inflammation, which can occur due to several factors, such as infections, environmental allergens and irritants. It is an immune mediated and multifactorial condition that presents with a varied and complex clinic. Typical asthma symptoms include recurrence of paroxysmal dyspnea, wheezing, and coughing. Final considerations: Asthma is a heterogeneous disease, which globally affects approximately 300 million people, characterized by chronic inflammation of the airways. It is defined by the history of respiratory symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing that vary over time and in intensity, along with variable limitation of expiratory airflow. Allergic asthma tends to start in childhood and is associated with T helper 2 cell responses whereas non-allergic asthma is late-onset, more common in women and obese patients, and can sometimes be very difficult to treat. The first choice for treatment is the combination of inhaled corticosteroids and long-acting β2 agonists.
