• Abstract: Bisphosphonates are included in the list of drugs administered in a very broad way to those people who are diagnosed with tumor metastases in bone tissues and in people with the acceleration of osteopenia caused due to a kind of imbalance between the action of osteoblasts and the activity of osteoclasts, known like osteoporosis. The main role of bisphosphonates is to decrease bone resorption, stimulating osteoblastic activity. In addition, this drug is able to inhibit recruitment and, mainly, the promotion of osteoclast apoptosis. Currently, there is an association between bisphosphonates with aseptic bone necrosis, that is, with osteonecrosis of the jaws, especially in individuals who are undergoing extractions. The research has as its theme to analyze the relationship between bisphophonates and osteonecrosis of the jaws. The general objective is the relationship between the use of bisphosphonates and osteonecrosis of the jaws. The research methodology consists of a bibliographic review, analyzing what the world and national literature discusses on the subject, through scientific articles, monographs, academic journals, books, dissertations and consultations in academic sites related to the theme. It should be noted that the current period has no way of specifying the main mechanism related to the development of osteonecrosis of the jaws induced by bisphosphonates. It was also found in the present research that there is still no precision regarding the treatment of osteonecrosis of the jaws, with no unanimous protocol.
