• Abstract: The function of cemeteries should be to minimize the environmental impacts on the population and to be in places far from the community, however, it is observed that it becomes a great stronghold of sanitary problems for cities. This work aimed to analyze a public cemetery located in the city of Recife based on the influence of the historical context of implantation and according to the requirements of the National Council of the Environment. Tactile-visual tests were carried out at some points in the cemetery to characterize the type of soil. The tactile-visual analyzes observed showed a soil with sandy characteristics and the presence of silts, white to grayish in color, with an approximate permeability of 10 -4 cm/s, with hydraulic conductivity outside the standards required by CONAMA 335/ 03.
