Abstract: Portosystemic shunt (PSS) is an anatomical alteration that diverts venous blood drained from the stomach, intestine, pancreas and spleen to the systemic circulation, bypassing the liver, whose vessels provide resistance. It can be either congenital or acquired, either intrahepatic or extrahepatic. It affects dogs more than cats and is mainly associated with pure breeds. Usually the portal vein or its branches persistently communicate with the vena cava and the azygos. The trainer´s remarks and clinical signs that indicate a suspicion of the disease are: developmental delay; thinness; gastrointestinal problems; polyuria and polydipsia; dysuria; pollakiuria; anuria; urethral obstruction (mainly by ammonium urate); seizures and other neurological alterations. The diagnosis is made through a thorough clinical examination, with the performance of complementary laboratory tests, imaging, as well as quantitative analysis of uroliths. The case report is about a dog, male, puppy, Yorkshire Terrier, with SPS who presented only urinary manifestations, such as urethral obstruction by plugs and urinary stones. Were analysed urinalysis, urinary protein/creatinine ratio and uroliths of the animal.
