Abstract: The present study emphasizes that the placenta is a temporary organ exclusive to mammals, responsible for providing essential nutrients for fetal development, metabolizing maternal hormones, and protecting the fetus against external agents, highlighting the importance of performing macroscopic and histopathological examinations to avoid complications during the gestational period. The process of placentation is described, from embryonic implantation to the formation of placental villi, emphasizing the importance of different types of trophoblasts. The decidual reaction is emphasized as essential for successful implantation, preventing immunological rejection and contributing to a healthy pregnancy. It is important to note that studies show that placental complications lead to alterations and inadequate conditions for fetal survival; variations in the placenta can directly impact the Apgar score of a newborn, as it is an organ closely linked to the fetus and establishes parameters that reflect its conditions at birth, depending on the conditions to which it is subjected in the intrauterine environment.
