Abstract: The production of colored cotton is an agricultural activity of great socioeconomic importance, especially in the Brazilian Northeast, carried out by small farmers and crucial for generating employment and income in the countryside. Furthermore, family-based farmers in this geographic region benefit from cotton cultivation due to its high adaptation to local climatic conditions and drought tolerance. In this sense, the present study aimed to consolidate information about colored cotton in Brazil, with emphasis on the Brazilian Northeast, through a bibliographic review. It was observed that colored cotton cultivars are adapted to modern requirements, which reduces costs for the textile industry and contributes to reducing the release of chemical effluents. However, the current market does not fully meet demand, especially for export, which requires larger volumes. To meet this need, the cultivation of organic colored cotton has been an alternative, attracting an audience concerned about sustainability. This type of cotton eliminates the use of chemicals in dyeing the fabric and allows savings in the knit finishing process, being sought after by companies engaged in "green fashion". Despite the importance and benefits of colored cotton, studies on the subject are still incipient, requiring the development of more research in this area.
