Abstract: Needlestick injuries are a significant risk for dental professionals and students due to direct contact with biological materials during clinical procedures. In this context, the aim of this study was to provide an understanding of the challenges faced in preventing needlestick injuries and propose strategies to mitigate them. The method consisted of a literature review covering studies published between 2014 and 2024, using the electronic databases PubMed and Google Scholar. The results showed a high prevalence of needlestick injuries among dental students and professionals, with particularly high incidence among interns and recent graduates. Found risk factors include lack of experience, absence of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and specific work hours. It was concluded that although there are clear guidelines and set up preventive measures, the incidence of needlestick injuries stays high due to gaps in knowledge and adherence to biosafety protocols.
