Abstract: Due to the difficulty students have in understanding chemical phenomena in classes where schools follow traditional teaching methodologies, alternative activities such as experimentation are used to arouse student curiosity and interest. The use of experiments in lessons can also facilitate learning by reducing the abstraction of content that is only covered theoretically. In this context, the subject of perfumes was discussed with students in the second year of secondary school, using a motivational text and an experiment to produce eau de cologne. The proposal was applied at the Fernando Rodrigues da Silveira Application Institute (CAp-UERJ), involving 67 students from three different 2nd year classes, in May 2017. The work consisted of four activities (an investigative questionnaire, an introductory text, an experiment and an evaluation questionnaire), the aim of which was to stimulate the students and facilitate the teaching-learning process in order to achieve meaningful learning. The text applied was designed to present basic information about perfumes, so that they could read, each at their own pace, and discuss the subject among themselves and with the teachers. In the experimental activity carried out in the laboratory, they made colognes with different fragrances and took them home at the end of the lesson. The results obtained showed that experimentation and the use of text were effective in promoting the teaching and discussion of chemistry subjects to associated with perfumes, since the students participated in all stages of the process, showing interest and enthusiasm. The results of the evaluation questionnaires showed that, according to the parameters used, the students had a good understanding of the subject matter and a good ability to debate the topics involved.
