Abstract: Climacteric is the period of a woman’s life that indicates the transition from the reproductive phase to the non-reproductive phase. This period is marked by hormonal changes that significantly affect the biopsychosocial conditions of women. One of the prevalent conditions during climacteric is systemic hypertension (SH), mainly in the postmenopausal phase. The objectives of this work were to research the main symptoms of climacteric and present nutritional recommendations according to the main guidelines for the prevention and treatment of SH. The methodology was a bibliographic review based on articles and mainly on national guidelines dealing with this subject. The theme is justified because it is a serious worldwide public health problem today. Due to the characteristic hypoestrogenism of climacteric, women are more susceptible to SH, and it is estimated that about 80% of women can become hypertensive after menopause, especially those with obesity and abdominal circumference above 88 cm. As a contribution, the work presents that it is possible to prevent the development of SH, provided that intervention is preferably performed before metabolic and hormonal changes occur in menopause. Nutritional recommendations based on the presented guidelines are presented, emphasizing that they are similar and complementary, with no significant disagreements between them. The relative impact of isolated functional foods is still not evident, requiring further research. It emphasizes the importance of nutritionists developing prevention, education, and adherence strategies for hypertension treatment and promotion of climacteric women’s health as well as society in general.
