Abstract: The use of alcohol is a cultural practice that has been used by society for centuries. However, stopping drinking can lead to the onset of Alcohol Abstinence Syndrome (AAS), a condition characterized by various signs and symptoms. Although there is still no approval from the FDA and EMA regulatory agencies for the use of drugs in the treatment of alcoholism, several drugs have been prescribed off-label for this purpose, including ondansetron, baclofen, topiramate, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and benzodiazepines. This study took a descriptive approach to off-label drugs used in the treatment of alcoholism, as well as the consequences of alcohol abuse in society. The objective was achieved on the basis of a literature review and thematic interpretation.
