• Abstract:

  This article presents, comments

  and discusses, respectively, the definitions of

  photography, commenting its use for the purpose

  of recording and transmitting information and its

  role in society, the different uses and functions

  and its reference as document, highlighting the

  need for informational treatment of photographic

  collections. It also addresses the concepts

  of documentary analysis and indexation and

  expresses the differences between the indexing

  of textual and iconographic documents,

  highlighting the need to use methodologies more

  appropriate to the document form and presenting

  methodologies adapted to the informational

  treatment of images. Methodologically, the

  research is exploratory and was carried out

  in the photographic collection of the School of

  Music of the Federal University of Rio Grande do

  Norte (UFRN). It aims to address iconographic

  documents only in the form of photographs, that

  is, images produced from light and recorded on a

  medium through physical-chemical or physical

  numeric processes. And he concludes by confirming the feasibility of the methodology

  tested, proposing a questioning about its low popularity.
