Abstract: Introduction: irritable bowel syndrome is a chronic and functional disease that manifests itself as different signs and symptoms, such as gastrointestinal discomfort and changes in bowel habits and stool characteristics. Some food groups are seen as possible precursors to these discomforts, such as FODMAPS (Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides and Polyols). The pathophysiological mechanism and treatment of this disease are not yet fully understood. In view of this growing prevalence, scientific studies have shown greater interest in studying the role of glutamine for the best treatment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Objective: Search for scientific evidence on the use of glutamine as an effective treatment for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Methodology: this is an integrative literature review, consisting of 7 original articles. The search for studies was carried out in the PubMed and ScienceDirect database, comprising original articles from the last 6 years, using the following descriptors, alone or in combination: Irritable Bowel Syndrome, FODMAP- restricted diet, FODMAP diet and glutamine. Results: it was observed that the results of research regarding the syndrome differed greatly, as there were articles that showed positive results and others who had no results with the use of glutamine. Conclusion: In fact, the use of glutamine in the treatment of IBS has been widely highlighted and studied currently in scientific circles, however, it is not possible to consensually state the real effects that its use provides in the lives of patients, being interesting. , that a more comprehensive view of the use of glutamine in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome be carried out in the future.
