A representação da mulher em The Tenant of Wildfell Hall de Anne Brontë
Neste artigo procuramos analisar o romance de Anne Brontë, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (1848), a partir da perspectiva das personagens femininas, ressaltando seus obstáculos diante das circunstâncias históricas. O romance aborda diversas questões essenciais para a história das mulheres na Inglaterra do século XIX. Casamento, divórcio, alcoolismo, violência doméstica, leis de custódia e de propriedade são alguns dos problemas presentes na jornada da heroína Helen Huntingdon. Deste modo, investigamos a maneira como a narrativa trabalha com a representação das mulheres em um contexto patriarcal. Para abordar o romance sob a ótica do condicionamento feminino neste cenário histórico, as autoras Caroline Norton (1808-1877) e Frances Power Cobbe (1822-1904) se tornaram elementos essenciais para a compreensão da realidade social e judiciária da Inglaterra. Além de artigos diretamente relacionados com o romance de Anne Brontë, outros autores imprescindíveis para a finalização do projeto foram John Stuart Mill, com o livro The Subjection of Women, e Family Fortunes de Catherine Hall e Leonore Davidoff.

Abstract:
In this article, we sought to analyse Anne Brontë’s novel, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (1848), from the perspective of the feminine characters, emphasizing their challenges in the face of the historical circumstances. The novel approaches several themes which were essential for the history of women in the nineteenth century England. Marriage, divorce, domestic violence, alcoholism, custody and property laws are some of the problems present in the journey of the heroine Helen Huntingdon. Thus, we investigated the way in which the narrative deals with the representation of women in a patriarchal context. In order to approach the novel under the perspective of female conditioning in that historical scenario, the authors Caroline Norton (1808-1877) and Frances Power Cobbe (1822-1904) became essential elements to the understanding of the social and judicial reality in England. Besides articles strictly related to Anne Brontë’s novel, other authors that were indispensable for the making of this project were John Stuart Mill, writer of The Subjection of Women, and Family Fortunes written by Catherine Hall and Leonore Davidoff.
