Abstract: Abstract: The purpose of this article is to provide an updated assessment of the provision of sanitation services in Brazil, highlighting the significant inequality in access to these services nationwide. The situation becomes even more impactful when considering that nearly 100 million Brazilian citizens are deprived of access to sewage collection. In this context, the notable disparity among the country's municipalities becomes evident, as is the case with São José dos Campos-SP, which stands out for its positive indices. However, despite the municipal management praising these good results as extraordinary, part of the local population remains excluded from this essential benefit. The research adopted a dialectical approach and a methodological procedure based on the strategy of indirect documentation from statistical sources from government agencies linked to the sanitation sector, seeking data related to the indices of sewage collection and treatment. The results demonstrated the complexity associated with the universalization of these services, which continues to perpetuate inequality and exclusion.
