• Abstract: Benzodiazepines (BZDs) are psychotropic medications used in a variety of health conditions such as insomnia and anxiety. The long-term use is associated with cognitive deficits, motor changes, tolerance and drug dependence. The inadequate consumption has become a public health problem worldwide, which requires interventions. The aim of this study was to elucidate the current scenario regarding the use of benzodiazepines and the implications of their irrational use, in order to provide intervention measures for pharmaceutical professionals in this scenario. Integrative literature review, of an exploratory and descriptive nature, carried out by searching for articles in the VHL and PubMed databases. Information on the appropriate use of benzodiazepines is deficient on search sites and in medication leaflets. Women and the elderly receive the most long-term prescriptions for BZDs, with an increase noted among young people. Through interventions carried out by trained clinical pharmacists, there has been an effective and safe reduction in the use of BZDs in geriatric patients. There is a need for direct intervention by professionals in the process of prescribing and recession the use of BZDs, mainly with the work of trained pharmacists.
