Abstract: Challenges related to solid waste management are becoming increasingly prominent on the public administration agenda. The growing amount of waste generated in both the commercial and domestic sectors makes clear the need for a more comprehensive approach to the appropriate disposal of these materials. Solving this issue is not just the responsibility of the public sector; requires the active participation of citizens. Currently, Brazilian cities face major obstacles in the search for efficient management of waste produced in their locations, aiming to guarantee future sustainability. Although the population longs for a clean and healthy environment, supports selective collection and values the cleaning of public roads carried out by the local government, it often does not contribute adequately to the disposal of waste, which could significantly reduce the amount of organic waste. , for example. Likewise, it is common to observe public administration disposing of waste inappropriately in places unprepared to accommodate the significant volume of waste generated. Given this, this article aims to explore the aspects surrounding this topic, including the historical context and evolution in waste management, the challenges brought by globalization, the incessant search for economic growth on a planet with limited resources, the rural exodus , urban agglomeration in large centers, a society characterized by excessive consumption and several other social phenomena that contribute to the increase in waste production and make its treatment difficult. In addition, alternatives and good practices across the country related to the topic will be examined. Therefore, through a bibliographical review, this article aims to discuss solid waste management and the challenges faced by Brazilian cities, from the collection to the appropriate disposal of these materials, at the same time that it seeks to propose alternatives for more effective management. of these resources.
