Abstract: Since its invention by the Lumière brothers in 1895, cinema has become a widely popular and influential art form. Animation, one of the most innovative branches of cinema, had important milestones such as ‘El Apóstol’ (1917) and ‘Peludópolis’ (1930), both by Quirino Cristiani. Max and Dave Fleischer were also pioneers, creating iconic characters such as Felix the cat and Betty Boop, who propelled animation into the commercial market. ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ (1937) revolutionised animation with new techniques and a monumental box office success. ‘The Little Mermaid’ (1989) marked a renaissance for Disney animation, winning awards and revitalising the studio's interest in animation. Using the National Common Curriculum Base (BNCC) for Year 7 in Natural Sciences, this work explores how scenes from ‘The Little Mermaid’ can be used to discuss the human impact on marine ecosystems and promote critical analysis and environmental awareness. The approach integrates Ausubel's theory of meaningful learning, relating new knowledge to students' prior knowledge, and aims to promote lasting learning and environmental awareness.
