Abstract: This study analyzes the participation of Normal Schools in the expansion of teacher training in Brazil in the period from 1890 to 1932, aiming to understand their influence on the development of the professional category. Through bibliographic research, it denotes the contributions of the Normal Schools in the consolidation of teaching and the formation of a professional identity, despite the socio-cultural difficulties faced. The role of educational reforms, such as the São Paulo reform of 1890, for the valorization of teachers and their practices is highlighted. Finally, emphasizing the importance of conducting more research in this bias, which helps to understand the socio-historical challenges that permeated teacher training and its reverberations today.
