Abstract: The Campos de Altitude, an ecosystem of the Atlantic Forest Biome, presents remarkable biodiversity, a diversity of environments and landscapes of admirable scenic beauty, providing a rich community of birds represented by more than 200 species. Many of these species use these areas at specific times throughout the year and are considered migratory. They are also home to some species that are threatened with extinction, as well as endemic species. The conversion of these environments to other uses has been occurring at an accelerated rate in recent decades, causing significant impacts on biodiversity, affecting the water system and abruptly altering the characteristics of the original landscape. Based on this problem, this research aimed to analyze how rural producers in the municipality of Jaquirana/ RS, located in the Campos de Cima da Serra, in the northeast of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, evaluate the practice of birdwatching as a sustainable instrument for the conservation of natural grassland areas. To this end, a questionnaire was sent to 18 rural producers with the aim of finding out more about the proposal presented in this study. It was found that 83% of those interviewed believe that it is possible to maintain native grassland areas through the practice of birdwatching. However, more than 50% of the sample have no interest in exploring this sustainable practice, while approximately 40% of these are willing to open their gates for bird watching on their properties. This shows that the search for new alternatives for the conservation of natural environments is extremely important for the conservation of grasslands.
