Abstract: This article examines the street carnival of Santa Maria (RS) between 1960 and 1981, focusing on the carnival parades. The objective was to describe the city's street carnival by identifying the samba schools active during the period—considered manifestations of national culture—the locations traversed by the parades, and the presence of government censorship in the carnival context. This is a qualitative study, with data collection based on bibliographic and documentary research methods. The Municipal Historical Archive of Santa Maria “José Antonio Brenner de Brenner” (AHMSM) and the libraries of the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM) constituted the research field. The results, drawn mainly from the now-defunct newspaper A Razão, revealed the existence of at least nine samba schools in the city, which paraded through at least thirteen different locations. Furthermore, it was possible to identify the censorship measures applied to the carnival, especially to street festivities.
